| Gotta be a master, face your monster "do not mistake kindness for weakness." PERSONALITY What surprises most people when they first meet Young-ho is how despite his seemingly stoic and imposing nature, he's actually quite kind to those that warrant it. Most of the intimidating aura he gives off is a result of his training to become the next leader of his clan. While eloquent and well-spoken when talking about strategy or politics, it's more small talk and trying to be social where he falls a bit flat, so to speak. Not for lack of trying, of course - in life he did have his social circles, however small they were. He just prefers to be quiet and let others talk first to get a feel for the situation before speaking up, with the intent of being deliberate as possible when talking to make sure there's no confusion as to what he's saying. Young-ho is also a naturally curious person, wanting to learn more about the world he's in and trying to do his best to navigate the massive labyrinth that is vampire clan politics. Even if certain parties think him nuts to actually willingly want to do so. Behind that quiet and stoic nature, however, lies the heart of someone who wants to change the world for the better. In life, it was his eventual dream to open a bookstore for his fellow Koreans, and in death, he was lucky in the fact that Jaehyuk had allowed him to nurture his ideals and continue to strive toward a future where vampires and humans could actually get along. This especially is true in light of knowing that it was humans, vampires, and other supernatural beings that had teamed up to prevent the potential end of the world. He does try to work through situations as seeing the big picture, as shown by how willing he was to work with the hunters despite others urging him not to and that up until Molly's situation had come to light, most clans didn't have much reason to interact with hunters outside of dispensing their own brand of justice toward rogue hunters that went after their clan members. However this also means despite it not leaving a good taste in his mouth, he isn't completely unwilling to participate in deception if it means protecting his clan members, himself, or others. Sometimes, despite his age and the wisdom that comes with it, not only does he seem to fall a bit flat when it comes to social interaction, Young-ho sometimes comes off as being "stuffy" and old-fashioned. Some old habits are hard to break, so his speech sometimes comes off as being more formal than he intends for it to be. Never mind that he does suffer from jumping to conclusions once in a while, downplaying or grossly exaggerating the emotions of those around him. He tends to operate more on logic, and sometimes his curiosity gets the better of him and ends up with him making an ass of himself without really trying or acting much younger than even his physical age, though these incidents are few and far between - a prime example is how he'd sneak out to see the intricacies of the modern world and how he basically pouted when called out on "acting like an impulsive teenager" from both advisers and allies alike when it came to light. He also is not a big fan of keeping secrets, ironically - despite having to keep his vampiric nature under wraps in most circumstances in the outside world or even to protect his identity when out among mortal men - though he does know it is out of necessity more than anything. With regard to his alias versus his real name, it (and any outright admittance of what he is) only will be revealed if either confronted about a trait that shows his true nature or he feels that he trusts someone enough to reveal his real name. However, this will take some time, as he knows that revealing one or both could potentially be a death sentence for him. HISTORY Young-ho Kim was born in 1886 in Seoul, and as the eldest son and middle child, he did his best to support his family when they needed it, first working alongside his father before trying to gain passage to America to earn more money for his parents and sisters. Never mind that he wanted to see this apparent "land of opportunity" and experience it with his own eyes.
However, several things were preventing him from doing so, including the fact that he would've been too young to be considered at the time - if not for some, shall we say, creative smudging. He eventually gained passage to America and ended up in Hawaii doing farm labor, far from what he was originally hoping to do (Young-ho was always a curious child by nature, and he always liked learning how things worked), but it was at least something, and he did his best to send money back home whenever he could.
He eventually moved to the mainland after his initial work contract was up with the promise of potentially more money for him to make, settling down in California and eventually meeting the love of his (human) life. They had a child together, and while they struggled, they made the most of what they had. Young-ho even was in talks with other members of the Korean community to try and start up a small bookstore.
Unfortunately, he (along with his wife and daughter) had died before any of that came to fruition. (He would find out later from his great-uncle, who was also turned (but not by the same maker) that his daughter survived and he does have descendants/relatives in both Korea and America)
However, Young-ho was given a second chance at life due to the actions of one Jaehyuk (James) Woo. He was one of the members of a small group that was helping fund Korean-run businesses in the area, and one of the biggest supporters in helping import books for what was going to be Young-ho's passion project. What Young-ho didn't know until that moment as he lay dying was that he was a vampire, and a clan leader and Lord at that. While there was some explanation of what was going to occur, for the most part, Young-ho only accepted the offer at a "second chance" at life and an opportunity to make things right in the wake of the accident that had (supposedly) taken the lives of the rest of his family.
The first decade or so after his "death" had passed by him in a blur, having been his fledgling adjustment period - and surprisingly, despite the fact that it might be counter-intuitive to do so, Young-ho's maker did something that most other vampires wouldn't have with their children once he deemed the younger man well enough to not have to worry as much about losing himself to the bloodlust - he let his keep and nurture the ideals instilled in them from his human life. As a result, Young-ho, while having adjusted surprisingly well to his newfound second chance (or as well as he could, considering) - was invested in trying to bridge a gap between humans and vampires. His maker had even taken the time to start teaching the younger vampire the intricacies of vampire politics, grooming Young-ho into being the next leader of the clan once he was older.
That chance came sooner than any of them had originally thought, however - only lasting for another few decades once Young-ho had finally readjusted fully to his vampiric nature. While on a diplomatic tour to try and begin garnering support for an alliance with human sympathizers, Jaehyuk was brutally murdered. As a result, there was the beginnings of a power vacuum within the clans, and Young-ho had to step up earlier than anticipated in order to follow in his maker's footsteps. He eventually tracked down the clan leader that was responsible for the assassination, and in a bid to prove he was worthy to take his maker's place - murdered him and completely wiped out the clan in retaliation to avenge Jaehyuk's murder.
It would come to be his greatest regret.
But it was exactly what he needed to do to prove his place, and that was what mattered. (There are moments that he wonders if just killing the leader would've been enough, but after having a few decades to think on it, he's gotten much better about trying to move forward from it.) Young-ho did what he could, even with the odds stacked against him. And even despite his elder advisers' urging to lay low for the time being, he decided to go full-steam ahead on the plans for the alliance between humans and vampires, adapting it into his own main platform within the world-spanning Council. It was only after a half-century of being his clan's leader that he had caught the attention of a young huntress named Molly Spencer. The two had crossed paths previously (unbeknownst to each other as to who they really were, never mind that he was using his on-again-off-again alias of "Ryan Kim" at the time) - and now with knowing her role in stopping what was classified as a potential-Apocalypse situation three years prior as well as her blood ties to one of the most powerful vampire lords still living - he knew she would be the first step in trying to solidify the hunter-vampire alliance.
Now it was just a matter of trying to convince the rest of the Council to at least start to entertain the same thoughts. ABILITIES As a vampire, Young-ho does come with the standard perks - enhanced strength, speed, minor regeneration ability/healing factor, all of which can be enhanced further by drinking blood. The quality of blood does seem to influence the regenerative capabilities and added strength, with bagged blood being the weakest and fresh blood being the strongest. It seems to be a matter of how much "life" is flowing through the blood to show how viable it is. Due to his age, Young-ho can survive on bagged blood for a time and only needs to feed every once in awhile.
Unfortunately, he does seem to have an aversion to just about every other form of human food as a result, making his diet strictly blood-only. Young-ho also has the traditional vampire weaknesses as well, mainly regarding sunlight, beheading, being staked through the heart, and silver - with the last one being slightly less of a problem due to age/training - instead of being a wound that won't heal, it just takes massive amounts of energy/blood to heal from.
He also can glamour people - though in all honesty, Young-ho doesn't like using it all that often. The few times that he does use it, it usually is more in the vein of gentle persuasion rather than outright coercion. He can use it in the latter case, of course, but besides the fact that it would be difficult depending on the target's mental defenses and the complexity of his orders - he prefers for others to have their own free will, especially when it comes to feeding. The only exceptions to that rule have been the morally bankrupt - or those directly threatening those under his protection.
A bloodline ability that has cropped up within the last few decades (and what he will later find out is actually from his human bloodline and not his vampire lineage) is the ability to shapeshift. This ability has been a major supporting factor in his regeneration capabilities, and has been an invaluable tool in fights. At the moment, Young-ho has displayed the ability to shift his limbs into blades, extend his fangs/claws out further and even displays a full-body shift into a more monstrous form. However, it takes concentration for him to hold those forms, and doing so expends a lot of energy out of him.
